Advertising

Making a quick visit to Avon Valley Railway yesterday with Dad, I noticed that they have reclaimed some of the old advertising boards from yesteryear. See how many of them you recognise. The more familiar ones there are, the older you are, of course...

These were the days when smoking was not punishable by instant hanging,, drawing and quartering! Indeed, in some circles it was even thought to be good for you.

Yes, they do show all the signs of their long lives, Cro. Sadly, so do I!

I recognise a few of them. Tizer definitely and Woodbine, my nan's brand of coffin nails. The tobacco ads reminded meof the tobacco sweets you could buy when I was a kid that smelt very similar to the real thing. And the sweet cigarettes too with the red food dye on one end so you could pretend you were smoking.

Hard to think that people once thought smoking was good for your health isn't it? There are a lot of people paying a terrible price for that mistake!
Cheers

Very true, Helsie.

I remember the sweet cigarettes, SP but not the tobacco sweets.

My son and I have been watching old episodes of 'Mad Men' the American series about Madison Avenue advertising me in the fifties. They all smoke like trains and drink like fish, and, of course, are having to deal with the new medical information just coming out that suggests smoking might be bad for your health. Very interesting series.

Thanks for that, Katherine. I haven't watched that series at all but I think I might catch up with it when I can.
