"Well, there is only one piece of advice I can give you," said the wisest of wise men. "The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon."

Street cred

My Ford Probe is up for sale.

I was quite happy with my aged Peugeot 106 until Keith acquired the Probe and made me take it on. I have to say, I got used to it. It was quite pleasant having leather seats, electronic windows, air conditioning and cruise control. Actually, scrub the cruise control - I never really got the hang of that.
However, it was quite addictive shooting up the A483, being able to outpace the idiots who, seeing a mere woman at the wheel, foolishly thought I'd be no match for them and shouting, "Eat dust!" at them as they trailed behind in the ever lengthening distance...
But, back to reality.
It is now time to pull in my horns, take account of my newly restricted budget and take delivery of something a little more economical...
like a Toyota Yaris, for example.

OK, it's not so good for my street cred, but it is better for my budget.

I advise a Nissan Micra. Very reliable and much better value for money than a Yaris. Then again the Fiat Grande Punto is an excellent budget car.

We'd never change from a Yaris, we've got the diesel at the moment and it costs next to nothing to tax. I think the new models look very sporty and the performance is ace, we'll never get my finger nail imprints out of our dashboard!

Too late, YP - I've already bought it from a nice young lady a couple of miles from here.
Paul, I'll let you know if Keith's fingernail imprints ever find their way to my dashboard! Trouble is, he never lets me drive him - can't think why!

I test drove a Yaris when I was shopping for a new car last year. Lovely little car, but a bit small for my North American taste. I may yet regret my decision, with petrol prices here rising above a dollar per litre.

A dollar a litre! It's at least £1 a litre here, Dale. :( I did get used to driving the Probe but the little one is more practical for me now.

I LOVE my Yaris!! I have the Verso, bought to transport two greyhounds, one of them elderly and with a heart condition. Being unfit myself, I didn't want to lift a four and a half stone dog any further than I had to.

That was my main reason for choosing the Yaris, but it truly is a great little car - economical, nice driving position, fast and nippy and light on the steering. I love it. It's a joy to drive.

When my second son borrowed it last year and nearly got it written off I was distraught to discover that they don't make them any more, but it did get repaired, thank goodness.

Did I mention that I love it?
