"Well, there is only one piece of advice I can give you," said the wisest of wise men. "The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon."

Going to the vet

Today was Toby's 'check up and injections' visit to the vet. It should have been in November, but his record card has mysteriously disappeared and we didn't get a reminder from the vet.
"Ah, we installed a new computer system then," the receptionist declared with the air of winning the lottery, "So it will have got lost in the system."
Oh goody, goody, I was tempted to reply, because now, instead of a booster, he has to start with a new course of injections. No apology, of course. Is it part of the training for people dealing with the public these days that they must on no account apologise for anything?
So, we got in to see the vet, a young lady from County Cork, and Toby was, amazingly, as good as gold during the whole visit. So good, in fact, that I'm wondering if someone has quietly done a swap and I've got the wrong dog!

I often wonder how you manage to keep him so clean. I can't say our Percy enjoys a bath, but he does submit to it without complaint. He's not too keen on the blow drier and towel rub-down after, though.

He spends a lot of his time a grubby shade of white, Dale, especially when he has been rolling round the field. ;)

As you say, Jenny, apologising has become a lost art. It's sad. As a newcomer to your blog please may I enquire as to what Toby needs his injections for?

I lost a filling recently. The dentist put in a new one but I think she disturbed the filling next door because that night it also came out. No apology and I end up paying for the new treatment which involved a post and a porcelain crown - £239... and I'm an NHS patient.

They are the regular annual injections against parvovrirus, canine distemper, hepatitis and leptospirosis, plus the one against kennel cough which they need to go into kennels if we go on holiday without them. He is now just out of time for the booster, so needed one this week and another in four weeks.

NHS dental costs are pretty high these days, YP. If you were pregnant though, you would have got it free. :)

Got what free? (Tee-hee-hee)

Gosh. I've never been a dog owner so all that is news to me. Thanks.

Surely Toby hasn't done a 'new computer system' on you. Beware! Think of all those goodies he's going to want to try out till you get used to the new treats regime.

True apologies are amazingly hard to come by, possibly because the word 'sorry' has been so devalued by the manner in which it is used, and, or, the fear of reprisals which can be a consequence of the admission of weakness.

An expression I'd not heard before. "to pay immediately and in full" Must be an English thing. I echo the sentiments of YP: Thanks for the history lesson.
